Content Overview: Studies have proven medical cannabis to be beneficial in the treatment and management of many diseases and conditions. As states implement medical cannabis programs allowing patients to use this form of treatment, it is imperative that healthcare providers become educated in this emerging aspect of medicine. This course provides a brief history of cannabis prohibition, as well as a review of federal, Kentucky state, and local laws with qualifying conditions specific to Kentucky. This course will provide the learner with an overview of the endocannabinoid system, its function, the risks and benefits of medicinal cannabis, and formulating appropriate patient education on the uses of cannabis. An overview of cannabis plant constituents, a description of available medicinal products, and the pharmacology of cannabis, including dosing, administration, and potential drug interactions, are also included. Lastly, there is a discussion on the signs and symptoms of Cannabis Use Disorder.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Brief history of cannabis prohibition.

  2. Review of federal, state, and local cannabis laws.

  3. Overview of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and its function. Understanding cannabinoids and their mechanisms of action. The risks and benefits of medicinal cannabis.

  4. Overview of cannabis plant constituents. Recognize qualifying medical conditions that allow for the recommendation of medical cannabis per Kentucky state law.

  5. A description of available products, including dosing and administration.

  6. Understand the basic pharmacology of cannabis, including potential drug interactions. Formulate appropriate patient education on the safe use of cannabis.

  7. Review intoxication, tolerance, dependence, and addiction as they relate to cannabis. Recognize signs and symptoms of Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD). Review DSM-5 criteria for CUD.
